First Communion

My aunt just sent a couple of first communion invitations for my cousin. For us Catholics, a kid’s First Communion is like a rite of passage for us to co-celebrate the Eucharist during the Holy Mass. So you can just imagine how important this occasion is to all of us.

A First Communion is normally administered to a nine-year-old kid. And it is done together with the whole class in school. We will celebrate my cousin’s First Communion in January. The kid’s already excited about it!

Road at night

Traveling even in the wee hours of the night is not scary anymore. There is a 24 hour towing that you can call if and when you encounter an engine trouble or an emergency. At least you can call someone should something happen to your car on the road.

A road made to be an alternative to the expressway is being used by a lot of motorists these days. It was reported that the road was really dark at night and only the lights of the cars passing by serve as light to it. A car got into trouble and a towing service accredited by the government responded. Because of it, they saw the situation of the road and it’s now lighted properly.

Don't drink and drive

I want to remind everyone to be careful when driving, especially now that there are so many parties going on and people are drinking. Do not drink and drive. Sure, there’s a motorcycle accident attorney available for you. But if you can avoid an accident from happening, do everything in your power to avoid one. We can do our share. As I’ve said, don’t drink when you know you will drive later on.

Quality of life

This coming year, I will focus more on the quality of life. I am done being passive. I am done letting life pass me by. I will be more proactive in 2010. I plan to work doubly hard, harder than the past years. I plan to take vacations in different places I’ve never been to like at turks and caicos resorts. I plan to work hard and play harder. I plan to do that for the rest of the year.

Uncle's farm

My uncle will be investing in a couple of stainless steel drums for their farm. I think he will use it as a rain barrel of sorts. He wants to be able to use it to irrigate his plants. He is big on gardening and planting crops right now. I actually admire the man. He retired early 2009 and bought a farm using his retirement fund. Look at his farm now! He is proud of it as he should. He made it what it is with his bare hands.

Save up on movies

One of the things I want to do this coming 2010 is to save up on movie time. I mean instead of going to the moviehouse, I might as well wait for the DVD release or wait for HBO to show it on TV. I will invest on a Samsung HDTV and put it in the living room for everyone’s use.

Imagine going to the movie house and paying for each ticket. At home, you can even invite 20 people over and just pay for the amount of the DVD and the electricity. That’s a lot of savings there! So it’s movie at home for me unless it’s a movie like Avatar…

Fifth Twilight book?

Stephenie Meyer appeared in The Oprah Show and discussed The Twilight Saga. One of the topics they talked about was the possibility of a fifth Twilight book. But her reply was cut from the telecast. Thank goodness a staff from the show told EW about it.

Here’s the article where you can read Stephenie’s reply. Will there be a fifth Twilight book? Or is Breaking Dawn more than enough closure to the saga?

Online education

The internet has become a powerful tool for those who know how to use it. There are working adults out there who are still out of a college degree. Since they are working, they can’t really go to a physical university to study. I suggest an online university instead.

Western Governors University is an accredited online institution by the Distance Education and Training Council as well as by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Those who wish to get their college degrees can choose from the online degree programs they are offering and be assured that they are getting quality education.

Paulo in Facebook and Twitter

PauloCoelho

Apparently, people are asking if Paulo Coelho is really the one posting in his Facebook account. Here’s the answer. Paulo in front of his desktop, Facebook-ing.

I do know he’s the one sending out the tweets. I am a follower and I feel it’s really him. I think he’s gaining more readers and followers because he is active in these popular social networking sites.

The Poet

thepoet

I am looking for new books to read. This is The Poet by Michael Connelly, recommended by a friend’s friend. I do hope it’s a good read. I love suspense/thriller stories and I was promised that this book has both.

I haven’t started it yet but I already have the book. Hopefully, it will live up to the promise made to me by the one who recommended it. I don’t like being disappointed in a book because it stops me from my reading marathon.

Trip and plans

Who wouldn’t want to go on ski vacations? My aunt was talking to some of us if we want to go on a trip with their family on the last week of December. It’s really too bad that I can’t go because of budget constraints. And because of work. I have tons of things to do and I really can’t just go off, especially now it’s end of the year.

Truth be told, I plan to make myself busier by next year. I have grand plans in place and I want to be able to accomplish all those next year. Ambitious, maybe. But I know I can accomplish it with determination and focus.

Dropping hints

Billie is asking his mom to buy him Clarks shoes. He’s sweetly dropping hints at first but when he realized that his mom won’t get it, he told her right out that it would be really great to have it for Christmas.

I remember when I was a little kid, I would throw a tantrum if my parents wouldn’t buy the toy I wanted. And then I realized that my parents really couldn’t afford to buy me new toys all the time. I wised up early on.

Quiverfull and oversized families

Did you know there’s actually a basis for the multiple children mentality of reality TV families like the Duggars? I didn’t know, too! Until I read this story from Newsweek.

Who doesn’t know Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar of the reality TV series “18 Kids and Counting” from TLC? Actually, the kids are 19 now, with Michelle giving birth to their 19th kid last week. They are a very large family who doesn’t have any qualms about the population control. Imagine spawning so many kids… my goodness! I wonder how her tummy feels without a kid in it.

Anyway, according to the Newsweek article, we can pinpoint Quiverfull as the idea behind these oversized families. It is an antifeminist, conservative Christian movement that motivates families like the Duggars. According to the article, Quiverfull is…

It is a pro-life-purist lifestyle known as Quiverfull, where women forgo all birth-control options, viewing contraception as a form of abortion and considering even natural family planning an attempt to control a realm—fertility—that should be entrusted to divine providence.

Read the whole article for the full information on this “ideology” of sorts. And let me know what you think.

Packages from abroad

The packages have started arriving since the first week of December. Every time a courier service man knocks on the door of our neighbor, I can see the eldest daughter running to get the box cutter. They are all excited to receive the gifts their relatives have sent from abroad.

I know the feeling of waiting for packages from abroad. My dad once worked in a big construction company in the Middle East and it took him two Christmases before he was finally able to go home. So it was several packages of gifts and knick-knacks that he sent to us before he went home.
