Zac Efron

Nicholas Sparks and Zac Efron

I don’t know what Zac Efron and his agent are thinking but it seems his star is shining less since the last High School Musical movie was shown. The movies he’s been in were so-so and this new one, the adaptation of the book The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks is so unexciting! Of all the books by Sparks that he’s chosen it’s that one which doesn’t ring a bell.

He should have said yes to Footloose. He should have starred opposite that Vanessa Hudgens again because they have chemistry. Or he should have auditioned and fought to have that role of Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games.

It would have made him a big star again like he should be.

What a waste!

I read that the movie John Carter is close to losing $200M in box office money. Ouch!

Taylor Kitsch, the lead actor in the movie, made a boo-boo before the movie opened in theaters nationwide wherein he told David Letterman in his show that Philippine immigration authorities asked for his iPhone in exchange for letting him pass immigration without a hitch. He mistook Indonesia to be the Philippines!

A movie like John Carter would have made a killing in the local box office. But with Filipinos pissed at his boo-boo and his insensitivity, ignoring the obvious recourse of apologizing to the country, well, the movie tanked.

Too bad for Disney they hired an insensitive actor for the lead role!

That John Carter actor

taylor-kitsch

Taylor Kitsch, that actor playing the lead role in the movie John Carter, is just plain stupid! Interchanging two Asian countries and not knowing which is which! He went to Indonesia where he had a bad experience with the immigration people in the airport. When he went to promote his movie in The David Letterman Show, he implied that the country where he had a run in with the immigration people where one asked for his iPhone was the Philippines. Couldn’t tell which is which?!?

I wonder how his movie is currently faring in local cinemas. A lot of Filipinos got mad over the wrong accusation. I just hope that boo-boo isn’t costing him a big box office return.

Better smile, girl!

Someone ought to tell Kristen Stewart that she looks infinitely better when she’s smiling…

kristen stewart smiling

Rather than when she’s scowling like there’s something bad she could smell under her nose…

kristen stewart scowling

She is far better looking when her face lights up with a smile. I don’t know if she is scowling because she hates the attention or she is just a foul-tempered individual.

If I meet her, I will tell her she better smile! Suits her!

Shutter Island on HBO later

Shutter Island

Shutter Island starring Leonardo di Caprio will be shown on HBO (Channel 39 in Global Destiny) later at 12:40AM. I am not sure if I will watch it since everyone’s asleep by then and I will surely disturb them with the sound of the tv on.

But I want to watch Leo!

;P

Feel-good movies

Now, let me say something positive about local movies… I’ll focus on the feel-good ones.

If you want an escape from the daily harshness of life, you can go see a Tagalog romantic-comedy. I’d recommend Sarah Geronimo‘s movies. The two with John Lloyd Cruz and the other one with Gerald Anderson. Those three movies were done to make the moviegoer feel good and experience an hour and a half of laughter and light drama. There’s also Regine Velasquez‘s two movies with Aga Mulach. I don’t like her movie with Robin Padilla or the other ones that she did. The ones with Aga are her best. I also watched a movie of the late Rico Yan with his then girlfriend Claudine Baretto. It’s also a feel-good movie, the one where Claudine wore a pink wedding gown. I forgot the title of that one but a co-worker recommended it to me and I enjoyed watching it.

You can also go see the real comedies like the ones of Vhong Navarro, Ai Ai delas Alas (specifically her Tanging Ina series), and the like. I would highly recommend Here Comes The Bride starring Angelica Panganiban. I had doubts before I went to see it with my two best friends. But I had a hard time keeping myself seated the whole time I was watching the movie. I wanted to roll on the floor laughing. Literally!

The ones where sex isn’t the main selling point of the movie are the best. Because there are so many stupid moviegoers who imbibe what they see in a movie. I am talking about the perverts!

Tagalog movies

Truth be told, I don’t have much faith in the ability of the Filipino movie-making industry to come up with something brilliant like Inception. Sure, I haven’t seen an indie film yet but Filipino filmmakers have a way of peddling sex as a selling point of a movie. I am not that sold on that idea. Yes, I know that it is a way to attract moviegoers. But think of Hollywood and other international films that didn’t use sex but became not only a critical but also a commercial success. Let me use Inception again as an example. There’s also Avatar. And a lot more other movies that focused on other themes but sex.

Think of Filipino movies that gained attention in international film festivals. It’s mostly movies made with too much boinking going on. If I am not mistaken, the only ones who gained much favorable criticisms were the movie made by Judy Ann Santos (which I forgot because it was forgettable in the first place!) and Mga Munting Tinig of Alessandra de Rossi. Other indie movies of Brillante Mendoza almost always showcase sex or the squalor of Manila.

Is there any more doubt why the local film industry is slowly dying a very painful death?!?

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The-Girl-with-the-Dragon-Tattoo

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is now being shown in malls nationwide, except in SM malls, that is. I am waiting for this movie because I really liked the book. But I won’t expect the movie to be better. History says that movie adaptations will always be a disappointment to book fans like me.

Still, I want to watch this one. Too bad this is a sexually graphic and violent movie so it’s a Rated 18. I can’t watch with the usual gang. I will watch this one next week with my best friend Tim.

Emilio Aguinaldo biopic

I don’t know exactly what the governor of Laguna is thinking but to produce the biopic of Emilio Aguinaldo, a Katipunan hero, is fine. But to budget a 100 million pesos for it?!? Come on! That kind of money can feed thousands of Filipino families! That amount of money can help build a lot of classrooms or send kids to school. It would have been better if you heard the governor plan to use the money that way. To waste it in a biopic that I don’t know if there’s anyone who is truly interested in???

Breaking Dawn

Twilight

I guess Twihards are still anticipating the release of the two-part finale of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. This is the final book adaptation where Bella Swan, portrayed by Kristen Stewart, gets to have sex with Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson. It’s their honeymoon and they get to be intimate. Forgive me but I passed on the 3rd movie, Eclipse, so I don’t really know how it ended. But this 4th movie will surely show the transformation of Bella from human to vampire.

Are you going to watch?

Missing Peter!

William Moseley aka Peter in Narnia

I missed him in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader! I am talking about William Moseley a.k.a. Peter Pevensie in the past two Narnia movies. He wasn’t a part of the Dawn Treader anymore. He appeared in a cameo role, in Lucy’s dream, but that’s it.

I was looking for other movies of him but apparently, the two Narnia movies were the only ones he was in.

Too bad :(

Young adult books turned to movies

Several Young Adult books are being turned into movies. After the success of the Twilight saga and the Harry Potter series, I think the movie world finally realized what a lucrative market the young adults are.

i am number four

I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore is already turned into a movie. It is a novel about teen aliens hiding here on Earth. Pittacus Lore is just a pseudonym of a person hired by James Frey to write a story that he already had in mind. There was a controversy surrounding this James Frey YA book factory that he has. But that’s another story to tell.

if-i-stay

The rights for the book If I Stay by Gayle Forman is said to be bought by Summit Entertainment already, the production behind the Twilight movies. Dakota Fanning is reportedly the one being eyed to play the lead role.

These are just two of the many YA novels that are turned/being turned into movies by big Hollywood production companies. There are more!

Leo my love ♥

Leonardo di Caprio

Leonardo di Caprio.

Sigh.

I lost interest in him for a while. I had a huge crush on him back in college, especially in the Romeo and Juliet movie. Then he went blah. And then my crush on him went back when he did The Departed. I am now in love with the man after watching Inception!

Can’t get enough of Leo!

The Lucky One

Have you noticed how the novels of Nicholas Sparks are being used to launch some actors into ‘bankability’?

There’s The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John and The Last Song. There are more Sparks novels worthy of being translated into the big screen but I am sure studios are already studying which one they’ll get.

Dear John starred Amanda Seyfried while The Last Song had Miley Cyrus. Both movies did well in the box office. Now comes the latest in the Sparks collection… The Lucky One. There are reports saying that Zac Efron is in talks of starring in the movie adaptation.

Hmm… sounds promising if Zac’s there. What do you think?

Birthing scene in Breaking Dawn

kristen-stewart-robert-pattinson-eclipse

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. If you haven’t read the book yet, let me tell you something that will happen in it. Bella (Kristen Stewart in the movie) will give birth to her and Edward’s (Robert Pattinson) baby. Yes, there will be a birthing scene in the movie!

According to the saga’s screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, the scene will not shy away from the intensity of that in the book. Har har!

I don’t know how they can pull it off considering KStew can’t even act in a kissing scene properly. Let alone a birthing scene! Aargh! Good luck on that one, Summit!
