America’s Next Top Model

Americas Next Top Model

I wonder where the winners and runners-up of America’s Next Top Model are right now. I’ve seen a couple of them at the runway in almost every Project Runway’s season finale. But as for major media exposure, apart from that one who had a run-in with an actress and her family at an airport, you haven’t heard anything from any one of the winners.

It makes you wonder if Tyra Banks is doing something good for these women or she’s just giving them false hope. Can they really become top fashion models or will they be just one of the many who dreamt and fell short?

Quiverfull and oversized families

Did you know there’s actually a basis for the multiple children mentality of reality TV families like the Duggars? I didn’t know, too! Until I read this story from Newsweek.

Who doesn’t know Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar of the reality TV series “18 Kids and Counting” from TLC? Actually, the kids are 19 now, with Michelle giving birth to their 19th kid last week. They are a very large family who doesn’t have any qualms about the population control. Imagine spawning so many kids… my goodness! I wonder how her tummy feels without a kid in it.

Anyway, according to the Newsweek article, we can pinpoint Quiverfull as the idea behind these oversized families. It is an antifeminist, conservative Christian movement that motivates families like the Duggars. According to the article, Quiverfull is…

It is a pro-life-purist lifestyle known as Quiverfull, where women forgo all birth-control options, viewing contraception as a form of abortion and considering even natural family planning an attempt to control a realm—fertility—that should be entrusted to divine providence.

Read the whole article for the full information on this “ideology” of sorts. And let me know what you think.

Give my kidney back!

Batista

Richard Batista, a vascular surgeon in Long Island, is asking his soon-to-be-former wife, Dawnell Batista, to give back his kidney which he donated to her in June 2001. He is divorcing his wife, claiming she cheated on him by having an extramarital affair. As part of the litigation, Richard and his lawyer is demanding $1.5million (£1 million), which he claims the kidney is worth. The way our minds work when we want revenge so badly!

Here’s the catch though. An organ donation is considered a gift in US laws. Organs cannot be bought and sold. Also, according to legal experts, there is no way Richard will get his kidney back. Poor guy!

Survivor Philippines update

I can honestly tell you that I am a reality tv fan. I love watching reality shows like Survivor, Project Runway, Amazing Race, Hell’s Kitchen, Iron Chef and the like.

So it is natural for me to get hooked on Survivor Philippines. Paolo Bediones is really bad when it comes to digging the “dirt” out of what’s happening at camps. There’s no comparison to Jeff Probst. He is so polite and can’t even dig out the true feelings and can’t capture the raw emotions of the castaways during Tribal Council. It would have been great for him to be able to make the castaways reveal their innermost thoughts, just like what Jeff does in the US version.

The action at camp is far more interesting than what’s happening in the US version of the show, though. Filipinos are normally territorial and quite loyal to their own. The castaways were divided into Naak and Jarakay camps. But there are merged now and is now called Chalam. It is therefore uncharacteristic to betray a camp-mate when it comes to the merge. A betrayal happened in the last Tribal Council. And too bad Kiko Rustia, the most recent castoff, is now off the game. I would have love for him to be part of the final 3, being a really honest to goodness player.

Only 8 castaways are left and the show is getting interesting more and more.

More Survivor updates from this day forward.

Fear Factor Philippines

Fear Factor the Philippine version started yesterday at ABS-CBN primetime bida. Hosted by Ryan Agoncillo, this reality show is being hyped by its promoters. I have doubts if this will be successful like Survivor Philippines. The challenges are just so gross, to say the least. Filipinos can stomach gross shows. We are that resilient. But on a daily basis?

Have you seen the premier episode of this reality tv? What do you think of it?
