Truth be told, I don’t have much faith in the ability of the Filipino movie-making industry to come up with something brilliant like Inception. Sure, I haven’t seen an indie film yet but Filipino filmmakers have a way of peddling sex as a selling point of a movie. I am not that sold on that idea. Yes, I know that it is a way to attract moviegoers. But think of Hollywood and other international films that didn’t use sex but became not only a critical but also a commercial success. Let me use Inception again as an example. There’s also Avatar. And a lot more other movies that focused on other themes but sex.
Think of Filipino movies that gained attention in international film festivals. It’s mostly movies made with too much boinking going on. If I am not mistaken, the only ones who gained much favorable criticisms were the movie made by Judy Ann Santos (which I forgot because it was forgettable in the first place!) and Mga Munting Tinig of Alessandra de Rossi. Other indie movies of Brillante Mendoza almost always showcase sex or the squalor of Manila.
Is there any more doubt why the local film industry is slowly dying a very painful death?!?
